DOUBLE DUTCH

Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art
Peekskill, New York
Saturday, July 17, 2010

An exhibition celebrating the Quadricentennial of the Dutch discovery and settlement of the Hudson River and its environs, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA), in Peekskill, New York, showcases contemporary Dutch installation art through July 26, 2010.

Sixteen artists are shown in a 11,000 sf exhibition space. The exhibition extends to the Hudson River waterfront where several major, site specific works are also shown. The selection involves artists with great promise - most have never exhibited in the US.

Much of the work has been created specifically for this exhibition, including work by three artists who came to Peekskill for the HVCCA artist-in-residence program. All the artists in the exhibition were born in the Netherlands or spent their formative art training there. The work has a strong relationship to architecture which is important in The Netherlands today; the work echoes some of the formidable history of Dutch furniture, and the sense of space and openness likely relates in part to the particular Dutch landscape.

The tour will be lead by one or both of the HVCCA founders, Marc and Livia Straus.
