AMERICAN FELLOWS STUDYING IN THE NETHERLANDS

RABOBANK FELLOWSHIP
Angela Misun Lee will study how the simultaneous administration of two addictive drugs,nicotine and cannabis, to adolescent rats will affect their impulsiviity as adults. At the Vrije Universiteit University Medical Center, the interdisciplinary environment will allow her to investigate issues from both behavioral and neurobiological perspectives. Understanding how drugs affect both brain and behavior is significant for drug treatments and policy.

DE LAGE LANDEN FELLOWSHIP
Melissa Lo will undertake her dissertation at Radboud University where she will examine the pictures made on behalf of and against Cartesian physics during the Dutch Golden Age. She will demonstrate how these epistemological images participated in the 17th century’s manifold cultures of representation; and how they served two simultaneous yet paradoxical functions: as didactic vessels of intangible truths, and as political, cultural and religious weaponry in the struggles to create as well as refute new world.

ING FELLOWSHIP
Bethany Hannah Singer-Baefsky will investigate the international legitimacy afforded to The Hague District Court, and why this court better enforces international criminal law than tribunals specifically designed to try international cases. She will further examine ways in which international politics impacts the efficacy of The Hague’s international criminal tribunals, and actions these tribunals ought to take to improve their effectiveness. Bethany will study at Leiden University.

AEGON N.V. FELLOWSHIP
Jessica Hope Tankard will research renewable energy generating facades, and will select the technologies that provide the most hope for architectural integration and propose the necessary design, energy grid, and policy changes to support this goal. Jessica will study at the Delft University of Technology.

MAARTEN VAN HENGEL MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP
Adam Miller Jaffe will study harpsichord and historical performance with Prof. Jacques Ogg at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. Adam's Fulbright year will end with a series of concerts and masterclasses in multiple U.S. cities, including Charleston, Boston, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and New York.

HEINEKEN FELLOWSHIP
Jessica Jennette Ludy will study under Dr. Bas Jonkman at the Delft University of Technology. Using a Dutch method, this project will investigate the direct effects of
non-structural flood defense measures (like floodplain restoration and "Room for the River" in Biesbosch National Park) on the risk to human life in the California Bay-Delta. The goal is to build more support for flood defense measures which merge safety with ecology.

DUTCH FELLOWS STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES

Fang Xiao Yang will study Art Therapy at New York University. Art Therapy is the field of study where the creative process is used as a means of psychological healing.

Jacqueline Mulders will pursue a graduate-level program at the Tufts University, The Fletcher School of  Law and Diplomacy where her core skills and knowledge as a generalist development practitioner will be combined with a concentration in human rights. She us particularly interested in humanitarian assistance, human trafficking, human rights, international security, HIV/AIDS in international affairs and a regional emphasis on (Southern) Africa.

Sjef van Stiphout holds a bachelor in Political Science and a quantitative Research Master from the University of Amsterdam. During his studies he worked on different research projects and publications in the field of democracy and religion. Sjef will pursue a master in the social sciences at the University of Chicago.

Abdelkhalek Zirar will study sustainable development and corporate social responsibility as legally enforceable phenomena University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Judith Ament plans to do a two-year Master of Science at Stanford University focusing on the biological aspects of environmental issues. She wishes to perform research on the effects of humankind on natural ecosystems, especially in the oceans. Judith is also interested in the sustainable use of land and water, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. She enjoys doing research in theoretical ecology, particularly marine ecosystem modeling.

Lilian Kreutzberger plans to specialize in is fine arts--painting and drawing--at Parsons School of Design. Lilian is leaving open the possibility to also explore using other mediums contributing to a better translation of ideas or concepts.

Maral Noshad Sharifi would like to pursue a career in journalism. More specifically would like to work as political reporter and either write for a newspaper or work for a News channel. Maral will study at Columbia University.

Mattias van Oomen plans to specialize in the anthropology of East Asia at Yale University. He will focus in particular on contemporary Japanese society. After mastering the most important languages, Mattias plans to do fieldwork in the areas of sports, education and gender and will try to understand recent changes in the make-up of East Asian societies.
